Wants to Replace Crowns With Veneers

I’ve been unhappy with my dental crowns. They’re metal based and have developed a dark line at my gumline. that wouldn’t be too horrible, except they’re on my front teeth. I think I’d like to get porcelain veneers instead. I’ve been looking at them and they’re much more attractive. But, my dentist said that he only does metal crowns. I’m really bummed about that, because I want to feel comfortable with my smile.
Is there no other option?

Darlene C. – Missouri

Darlene,

There is another option, but it will not be porcelain veneers. While you’re right that they create beautiful smiles, they need to be placed on complete tooth structure. When you received your crowns, your dentist had to shave the teeth down quite a bit to make room for the crown.

What you’ll want to do is to have them replaced with all-porcelain crowns. These will not create a gray line at your gumline. In fact, you’ll find them to be more attractive overall. They are more translucent, so look more like natural tooth structure.

I’m not sure why your dentist isn’t willing to place them. Your best bet is to see a good cosmetic dentist. Check on the mynewsmile.com website. They’ll have a list of qualified cosmetic dentists in your area.
