Why Can I Suddenly Not Get Veneers?

I had planned on getting veneers. My dentist knew there was a small cavity with one of my front teeth, but said it would not hinder the treatment. We scheduled an appointment for a month later. Then my husband got a HUGE job opportunity and we had to move right away. As soon as we got to our new city, I went to another dentist. Now all of a sudden he’s saying I can only have a dental crown and it must be metal based or it won’t be strong enough. Why two such drastically different treatments?

Dena,

It’s possible that the cavity grew to the point that it’s too big for a filling and you need a crown, but I will say I suspect that your new dentist just isn’t as comfortable with doing the porcelain veneers procedure.

The reason I suspect he’s inexperienced is his insistance on a metal based crown on a front tooth. Experienced cosmetic dentists know that it is much better to place all porcelain crowns on front teeth. Otherwise, the crown will be too opaque and will have a gray line at the gumline after a certain period of time.

I’d get a second opinion by an experienced cosmetic dentist. Look for someone accredited with the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD) or who is recommended by the mynewsmile.com website.
