Getting a single porcelain veneer

I have a discolored front tooth due to an injury as a child. I am getting a single porcelain veneer for it.  My dentist assured me that would be do-able and that we wouldn’t need to do them in pairs. After the veneer came in I grew concerned. It didn’t look anything like my regular teeth. Having them side by side made it very obvious. Did I make a mistake not getting two?  My dentist did call in the lab tech to try and make a new one.

Cindy S.- Wisconsin

Cindy,

Though it is possible to get a single porcelain veneer done in a way that looks beautiful and matches your teeth. However, it needs to be done by an expert cosmetic dentist. This is a difficult skill to master.

I don’t mean any disrespect to your dentist, but he sounds more like a general dentist who does some cosmetic procedures and definitely not someone who has invested the time to become an expert in cosmetic dentistry. I’m not just saying that because  you didn’t get a good result. The fact that he is consulting the lab tech is a dead giveaway. The tech is just someone who follows the directions the dentist gives him. It is the dentist who needs to know what to do. It sounds like, at the least, your dentist struggles with color matching.

I suggest you tell him not to worry about it and then go to someone with expertise in the area.  I’m not sure what area of Wisconsin you are from, but there are five cosmetic dentists listed on the mynewsmile.com website as being skilled and artisting from your that state. I’d pick the one that is closest to you and have him do your porcelain veneer.
